Ingredients
1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup baking soda
Coarse sea salt
Optional toppings: melted chocolate, candy sprinkles, or spooky food coloring
Instructions
Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Wait for about 5 minutes until the mixture is frothy.
Mix in dry ingredients: Gradually add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.
Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, until it has doubled in size.
Preheat the oven: While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Shape the pretzels: Punch the dough down, then divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist it into your desired shape.
Prepare the baking soda bath: In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water and the baking soda to a gentle boil. Carefully add the shaped pretzels one at a time, boiling them for about 30 seconds on each side.
Drain and season: Remove the pretzels from the bath and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
Bake: Bake the pretzels in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
Add toppings: Let the pretzels cool slightly, then dip them in melted chocolate or add candy sprinkles while warm.
Notes
Knead well for the right texture and don’t skip the baking soda bath for authentic flavor.
